Fareham Reach, Gosport, Hampshire
A large light industrial development was proposed for this site
adjacent to the harbour and underlain by deposits of the London
Clay. Some of the new buildings were to be located in an area previously
affected by a dense cover of mature trees. In such situations it
is often necessary to use suspended ground floors as a precaution
against significant ground heave following tree removal. However,
for economic reasons, the use of ground bearing floor slabs was
the preferred option.
A ground investigation was carried out in 2 phases, the initial
phase comprising trial pits and boreholes to determine the soil
profile and provide general foundation design advice. The second
phase of investigation included obtaining undisturbed samples and
undertaking specialist soil suction testing in order to enable the
potential for soil heave with changes in moisture content to be
estimated. Analyses based upon the results of the investigation
showed that the use of lime and cement soil stabilisation could
be specified for the improvement of the weak clay subgrade, for
both pavement and floor slab constuction, and to limit the potential
for ground heave to acceptable levels.
Silvertown, London
A mixed commercial and housing development was proposed for the
site of an industrial estate in London’s Docklands. Ashdown Site
Investigation undertook a geotechnical and geo-environmental ground
investigation of the estate whislt it was still in operation. Ashdown
staff liaised closely with the occupants to ensuring that minimal
disruption to their activities occurred during the course of the
investigation.
The investigation included a detailed desk study and risk assessment
of historic land use to establish the risks to the proposed development
and surrounding area of past and proposed activities on the site.
The intrusive investigation included the excavation of boreholes
by both window sampler and cable percussion techniques, together
with the installation and monitoring of standpipes to assess groundwater
and gas conditions. A combined Contamination Risk Assessment and
Geotechnical Interpretative Report were prepared for the proposed
development.
Littlehampton, West Sussex
Ashdown has been involved with the investigation of numerous phases
of this large development of warehouses, offices and production
facilities for a nationally known retailer. The developments were
located on greenfield sites and investigations have been designed
to provide advice for the design of foundations, ground floors,
and road pavements. The company was also commissioned to undertake
the detailed design and installation of borehole soakaways at several
locations on the development.
