PROJECT PROFILES: SLOPE STABILITY, SUBSIDENCE AND UNDERPINNING

Retaining Wall Failure, Hastings, East Sussex

Ashdown Site Investigation was asked to inspect the site of a retaining wall that had collapsed across a highway, exposing the footings of a three-storey townhouse above. An investigation was designed to provide information for the modelling of the soil and bedrock profile. The latter information, together with the results of tests made to determine the geotechnical properties of the soils, was analysed to provide advice for the design of emergency underpinning works for the house and the safe reconstruction of the retaining wall.

House Subsidence, Brighton, East Sussex

A number of houses supported on shallow footings bearing on valley bottom deposits had been subject to significant long-term settlement resulting in structural cracking.

Ashdown staff have been involved with the investigation of a number of these properties. Investigation works have included crack monitoring, the excavation of boreholes and trial pits to establish ground conditions and the nature of the existing foundations, and drain surveys, to establish route and condition. Our engineers have undertaken the design and supervision of traditional underpinning schemes when requested to do so and have provided detailed advice for schemes to be designed by others.

Slope Stability, St Leonards, East Sussex

A large landslip occurred in the rear gardens of a row of terrace of houses, constructed along the crest of a steep slope. The landslip exposed the foundations and threatened the stability of the building.

A ground investigation was designed to enable the cause of the slip and the stability of the properties to be assessed. The investigation included the organisation of a topographical survey, the excavation of exploratory holes and the installation of instrumentation for long term monitoring. The report on the investigation included remediation proposals, which were subsequently adopted by the supervising engineer and the associated insurance companies. The proposals included the construction of flexible earth retaining structures and improved land drainage. Our engineers also provided construction supervision and quality monitoring during the remediation contract.
