Ground Investigation

A ground investigation can be required for several reasons. You may require information for a geotechnical or contamination assessment, or you may need information for waste classification.  We recognise the importance of planning any intrusive works carefully to ensure that the investigation is cost effective and appropriate to the needs of our clients.

Investigation techniques available include:

  • Light cable percussion (shell and auger) boring
  • Rotary core drilling
  • Dynamic sampler boring (window or windowless sampling)
  • Continuous dynamic probing (DPH and DPSH)
  • Trial pitting (by hand or mechanical excavator)
  • Installation and monitoring of ground gas and groundwater monitoring standpipes

As part of the investigation our engineers and technicians are trained and equipped to undertake in situ testing such as:

  • Plate bearing tests
  • Soakage tests (borehole or trial pit)
  • In situ density tests (sand replacement method)
  • California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing
  • Standard Penetration Tests (SPT)
  • Specification compliance tests

In addition to the techniques available in house we can also advise on, and if necessary, arrange for static cone, pressuremeter or geophysical surveys to be carried out to enhance or assist in the design of conventional investigations.
